The University of Birmingham Dubai’s new campus has won a Special Prize in the prestigious Prix Versailles 2022 global architecture and design award. The World Judges Panel selected the Dubai campus for the award based on the criteria of innovation, creativity, reflection of local heritage and ecological efficiency, with the importance of sustainable development at the heart of its decision-making.
The campus, designed by Hopkins Architects and built by Khansaheb, encourages collaboration across academic disciplines and offers flexible learning spaces that incorporate digital technology.
The campus supports student needs across teaching and wellbeing, and it’s designed to be accessible to everyone – open to the local community for events and opportunities that will enrich the lives of Dubai residents.
S+B UK are proud to have been a part of the delivery team on this project, having manufactured and installed the laboratory furniture and fume cupboards for this iconic new campus.
We adopted an early engagement and collaborative approach to design, working closely with key stakeholders and taking influence and lessons from the UK campus. We also engaged with the supply chain and utilized the expertise of partners such as Broen and Trespa, to ensure that the laboratory furniture met the high standards of the University.
The laboratory facilities are designed to be flexible, with 90% modular workstations and 10% fixed furniture, to enable future adaptation and capacity for growth and change of discipline.
We are also proud to see that another amazing project we have been part of, the University of Leeds, Sir William Henry Bragg Building, designed by ADP Architecture and built by BAM Construction – was one of the five campuses to be shortlisted for this prestigious architecture award.
We are thrilled to see both projects recognized on a global stage!
