Why classroom design is so important

Effective classroom design needs to embrace a number of different elements. In 2015, a team from the University of Salford’s School of the Built Environment looked at over 150 classrooms in 27 UK schools to measure the impact of classroom design.

They used three categories to describe classroom design:

Naturalness: Light, air quality, links to nature, temperature and noise levels
Individualisation: Flexibility of space, connection to space, ownership of space
Stimulation: Vibrant, engaging and appropriate classroom interior design

All three categories had a positive impact on learning outcomes, but with some surprising nuances. For example, bright artificial light was found to be more effective than natural sunlight, as smart classroom design was able to offer sufficient task lighting without the glare of bright direct sunlight.

Effective classroom design also needs to strike a balance: High levels of colour and complexity were found to be less effective for learning outcomes than finding the right ‘Goldilocks’ intermediate level.

The research found that just 3% of the overall effect depended on which school was studied. Of the remainder, 55% depended on individual student characteristics and 45% was determined by the learning environment – highlighting the potential of creative classroom design to cater to different learning needs among diverse pupils.
